The fiesta is part and parcel of Filipino culture. Through good times and bad times, the Filipino fiesta must go on. Each city and barrio had at least one local festival of its own, usually on the feast of its patron saint, so that there is always a fiesta going on somewhere in the country. The Philippine fiesta is a lot more that it seems on the service. It is the tie that binds Filipinos from a region or an area together, a time to reunite with your extended family.

The Vigan City Fiesta is held every January 25. It is celebrated during the feast day of the conversion of St. Paul the Apostle. St. Paul is Vigan City’s patron saint. The Vigan City Fiesta usually lasts for several days. It includes within the period the celebration of the anniversary of the cityhood of Vigan, which is commemorated every January 27. Biguenos from all over the country and even abroad return to Vigan, as it is the custom of Filipinos to return to their hometown to join their family and friends in the celebration of their fiesta. They are joined by thousands of visitors from other parts of the Philippines and other countries in enjoying the cultural shows, parades and street dancing prepared by the local government with the help of the local industries and communities. There are also food fairs, arts and crafts exhibit, as well as a visiting carnival.

Fiesta is a time of joyful celebration of us Filipinos. However, in this time of pandemic, festivals become less enjoyable and amusing. Moreover, because of the pandemic the festival was not as joyful and blissful as the previous years. But celebrating the Vigan City’s fiesta amidst the CoVid-19 pandemic just showed us how truly important and special culture to us, Filipinos. Although, the Festival’s main events were minimized like the parades and street dancing, also the carnivals and food affairs. And most of the Biguenos with their families celebrated within their homes. Supposedly this festival is one of the biggest events celebrated by the City of Vigan and it is understandable that the authorities and organizers were just being cautious about the deadly virus spreading.

Culture is what defines our people, it is what makes us different from other races. Despite the ongoing pandemic that reached various of places and had infected many people, we were able to celebrate the Vigan City Festival safely and peaceful. And that we were able to keep our culture and traditions.
