The Historical Battle of Bataan
The Day of Valor,
also known as Araw ng Kagitingan, commemorates the valor of Filipino fighters
during World War II. Every year, around April 9th, it is
being commemorated in the country. A hero can be difficult to come by. A
hero is selfless, a truly good person, and someone who captures all of our
focus and causes change and development. Someone who is willing to put
their own life on the line to save another.
The Day of Valor,
also known as Araw ng Kagitingan, honors the bravery of Filipinos and American
soldiers who defended the Philippines during World War II when the Japanese
invaded the country. At dawn on April 9, 1942, Major General Edward P. King of
the United States Army was compelled to surrender to the Japanese more than
76,000 Filipinos, Chinese, and American soldiers. The soldiers were forced to
hike 90 miles (145 kilometers) to San Fernando's Camp O'Donnell. Thousands of
captives died from malnutrition, thirst, and illnesses before reaching the camp
during the trek (also known as the Bataan Death March).
Despite their
defeat, the captured soldiers remained strong and emerged as heroes as a result
of the battle. The fall of Corregidor was intensified by the defeat of Bataan.
However, if the Japanese had not taken this stance, they might have easily
overwhelmed all of the US bases in the Pacific. Bataan compelled them to slow
down, giving the allies precious time to train for subsequent battles including
the Battle of the Coral Sea and the Battle of Midway. On February 8, 1945,
American and Filipino liberation forces retook the Bataan peninsula.
Our soldiers' sacrifices will never be forgotten and will still be honored. The traumatizing encounters they've had. The wounds they received through the wars and their enslavement will be cherished and honored forever, for without them, we will not be able to enjoy the good things in life nowadays. They are true warriors who fought for their homeland as well as for all of us.
