Binatbatan Festival of the Arts
The
Viva Vigan Binatbatan Festival of the Arts, which takes place from the final
week of April to the first week of May was founded on May 3, 1883, as the Feast
of the Natives.
A large number of deaths in such a short period of time disturbed the
'naturales,' or native residents, as well as the mestizos,' or people of
Spanish ancestry. The people praised God for performing the miracle. The Holy
Mass in honor of Santo Cristo was attended by almost all of the locals. The naturales of
Vigan chose the third day of May as a day of thanksgiving for Santo Cristo,
whom they refer to as "Apo Lakay." This is the Holy Cross and Santo
Cristo of Sinait town's feast day. People have been gathering to the cemetery
chapel named Simbaan a Bassit to hear Holy Mass and continue their devotion to
Apo Lakay on Fridays and the third day of May since then.
They
celebrated Tres de Mayo for two to three days every year. The more time they
spent in their hometown, the more they pushed it as a fun tourist destination.
This is the city's third-celebration this year; the first being the Vigan
Cityhood Anniversary on January 22 with the Longganisa Festival, and the Vigan
City fiesta on January 25 in honor of Saint Paul, the city's patron saint.
Culture
is what distinguishes us from other races and characterizes our people. We were
able to enjoy the Binatbatan Festival safely and peacefully despite the continuing
epidemic that had spread to other locations and afflicted many individuals. We were also able to
maintain our culture and customs. But what matters today is that we made it
through and that people remember our culture and customs, which they should pass
on to the future generation.
